Chapter Two

“Let’s get started everyone,” I said with as much authority as I could muster. I was running our team meeting this morning since the old man called Drew away at the last minute. I still couldn’t shake the notion that Victor was doing all he could to appear supportive while secretly sabotaging me. I felt my heart palpitate when Drew told me I would have to run the meeting without him. He gave me a much needed pep talk and reminded me I was more knowledgeable about this project than he was.

“Drew and I have met with the investors to review the exterior renovations and we’ve also managed to lease the three primary commercial spaces.” I began.

“Why are we pretending to do this meeting without Drew?” Michael Conner interrupted. He had been one of my primary picks for the team because he had an excellent reputation for negotiating leases. I thought he would be the best choice to pursue the business incubator idea; but Drew had been against the choice and I was beginning to see why. Michael was an ass and he had zero respect for me.

“I am running this meeting because like it or not, I am the assistant project manager.” I arched my brow at him. “Do I have your permission to continue Mr. Conner or would you like me to tell Drew he can have his choice for lead on the business incubator?”

“O-of course not,” he said. “Please continue.”

“Thank you Michael.” I stood to gather a stack of documents, trying not to show how much he’d rattled me.

“These are dossiers on several local small business owners and upcoming college graduates. They are ideal candidates for the business incubator and we’d like to pre-lease half of the occupancy before construction begins. I trust you will pursue each candidate and get the space leased up front. Please take the time to meet with the architect before you approach potential tenants. They will give you renderings of the space to use as a marketing tool. Let me know if you have any questions.” I dismissed him abruptly and smiled a small smile of satisfaction, thanking David for the good advice.

“We have two restaurants and a boutique to design, with eight additional spaces not yet leased. I am personally working with the penthouse client.” I frowned, thinking of Sylvia and her ridiculous master suite. “I would also like to take the lead on the boutique, but Drew has decided Tara will run the bistro restaurant and Kelly will take the lead on the fine dining restaurant. Michael, keep working on leasing up the remaining spaces, you’re doing a great job as usual. If we can hand this property over, fully leased we all get a bonus and I’m sure everyone wants to see that happen.”

“Tara, can you give me an update on the demo work before we adjourn?”

I listened as Tara and the others brought me up to speed on their various assigned tasks and before I knew it we were done and I was fairly certain I had earned everyone’s respect.
